Painting Instruction

REALIST PAINTING COURSE 2011

Ateliers of the 19th century were working studios of artists who also taught a group of students. Programs lasted four or more years and were often five full days per week. Cast drawing was often studied the first year, monochrome painting the second, color painting in the third, and so on.

Progressive Instruction
The Realist Painting Course follows this progression in an accelerated 3 hr-per-week format, starting with the basics. Difficult concepts are broken up into smaller sections to make them easier to grasp. New concepts build on previous ones. Many consider opaque color mixing to be particularly challenging, therefore it is given special attention throughout the course. There are 10 sections:
  1. Introduction to Drawing
  2. Sight-Size Drawing
  3. Proportional Drawing
  4. Monochrome Painting
  5. Color Mixing
  6. Color Painting
  7. Plein Air Painting
  8. Using Photo-Reference
  9. Figure Painting
  10. Portraiture
Lessons to Refer Back To
Each section is subdivided into a logical progression of short lessons. As each lesson is introduced, an outline of the lesson is provided. By the end of the course you will have the entire program in written form to refer back to. The entire progression lasts 24 months, however there is no obligation to remain for the entire course. You may continue for as long or as little as you like.

Studio Painting Supplies Provided
Oil paints, brushes, and odorless solvent are provided at the studio and are included with tuition. Drawing supplies, canvas panels and outdoor painting supplies must be supplied by the student. Tuition is $115 for 4 classes. Winter, spring, and fall breaks are scheduled. Additional vacations can also be accommodated.
